Story/Premise
For years, The Punisher has waged a war on crime in New York City with an array of very large guns, but a lead on a major source of drugs, weapons, and more has set his many sights due west. NOW! Frank Castle's in the City of Angels, looking to give the devil his due. Things aren't all they appear, though, with a highly trained military hit squad hot on Frank's tail. Caught between a posse of Punisher predators and targets of his own one-man-war, Frank's manifest destiny may be a shallow grave!
Review of the Book
When Marvel announced that Frank Castle aka The Punisher, was getting his own on going series once again, I was really nervous. Why was I nervous? I honestly have no idea, but since Castle is one of my favorite Marvel characters I was scared that he wasn't going to be represented the correct way. Well, I was wrong. And was I wrong big time! This book gives you everything you want out of a Punisher title! Gore, action, brutality, twisted acts of violence, and awesome hilarious dry humor! Plus, there is a Danny Trejo cameo in the beginning of the book which gives the book some extra points in my mind. The writing from Nathan Edmondson does a perfect job of capturing the brutality and essence of who Frank Castle really is. In this issue, we are introduced to a few new characters I expect that we are going to be seeing a lot of in this monthly title. Officer Sam, who I suspect will be a love interest some time down the road, Lou, who is a cook in a small diner that Frank seems to frequent often and an arms dealer from the military who Frank uses to get his array of bad ass weapons. Upon the first look of the art I was not a fan, but as I continued reading on, I found that the art style of Mitch Gerads fits this book perfectly. I've always been more a fan of the very clean and crisp art style, versus the sketched out looking art, but Gerads does an amazing job of blending the two styles enough to where it feels like a gritty and dirty book. Overall I really loved The Punisher #001 and it reminded me exactly why I love the character of Frank Castle so much. The only thing I am concerned about is whether or not Edmondson's writing will be able to stay constant and give us something as fun as this issue every month, if this series stays constant with how good this first issue is, I have a feeling that this monthly, ongoing title, could turn into Marvel's own "Breaking Bad."
