Reeve Oliver: Touchtone Inferno
For The Fan Presents:
Reeve Oliver “Touchstone Inferno” (2007) Review
Dogwood was a Christian punk rock band that seemed to be hitting their stride in the 2000’s, and that may not make a lot of sense to most music fans out there, especially if you weren’t keen on Tooth and Nail’s mad dash to sign any act that had a regional following in this scene. Well, Dogwood had a guitar player named Sean O’Donnell and he went on to create a band called Reeve Oliver. This band is one of the best pop punk rock acts that you probably didn’t hear about, and it’s sad.
The band had a cult hit on their hands with their string of EPs that were released. After signing and touring with the help of the late great Militia Group (RIP), the band was able to get a full major record label contract. The band recorded a full record with Capitol Records, but Virgin Records bought them and the band had a full record on their hands and no where to release it.
Touchstone Inferno is that record, and it sounds amazing. It’s a self-released record that has 12 tracks of music and 13 tracks if you get it from itunes. O’Donnell has a knack for song writing and it shows here. The 3 piece band creates pop music with rock and punk ethos that you are going to absolutely find appealing. It’s catchy, it’s powerful, and flows through an easy to listen to record that you’re not going to find often today. From the first track “Yer Motion” through “Cheat Me Slowly” you will feel like you’ve heard this on the radio, it’s that catchy.
The record feels new, even though it’s 7 years old, and bands like Switchfoot should have these guys opening. Despite O’Donnell’s previous work, this is not a Christian rock group, and it is very well written, recorded and amazing. It’s a fabulous offering that features some good tunes. You’re not going to go wrong with picking this one up, that’s for sure.
Pros: Catchy, quality recording, independent, great song writing
Cons: Too short
