31 Days Of Horror (Day 1): The Evil Dead

The air is cool, the sky is red, and the leaves pave our walkways with soothing autumn colors. That could only mean one thing  — It's October. For me it's the start of everything horror. Haunted houses, scary mazes, halloween/costume parties, and horror films which all come together to fill our hearts with terror and fright. What more could you want?

This year I decided to start a 31 Days of Horror movie marathon. By this I mean, I will watch a horror film every day; some of which will be my choosing while others will be selected randomly. I tried this last year with a 25 Days of Christmas marathon, but that failed miserably. So, I thought I'd give it a shot with something I actually enjoy!

Let the fun begin!

It’s an iconic record that is going to live on as more people pay attention to how well this is layered.

Blood Sugar Summer “The Most Photographed Woman On The Planet”

For The Fan Presents:

Blood Sugar Summer

“The Most Photographed Woman On The Planet”

Blood Sugar Summer mixes one of the most compelling soundscapes with lyrics that will floor you. Their latest track “The Most Photographed Woman On The Planet” really shines light on a tragic tale. There’s an evolution of sound that comes through here. You will find that it’s beautiful throughout, and it focuses on transitional moments, so you aren’t getting anything that is droning or repetitive. It’s eclectic, it’s a sonic boom of lyricism mixed with an aural effect that just works.

Another Horror Remake: Chilling Trailer For The Town That Dreaded Sundown

I, like most of you, am tired of the lack of originality that seems to come with the horror genre. We constantly are given unnecessary remakes and over saturated subgenres (Found-footage, paranormal, etc.) There have been several films that have tried to break free from this cycle of lackluster films, but for the most part they fall flat on their face.

Here we are again with a remake that may change our ideas of what a remake is. Check out the trailer for the upcoming film The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

The Beloved Space Bandit Chris Pratt Will Host SNL's Season Premiere

In an effort to save the galaxy once more, Guardian of the Galaxy's star Chris Pratt has been chosen as host to kick off Saturday Night Live's 40th season premiere.

The show will air September 27, 2014. Alongside, Pratt Ariana Grande will make her debut on the show as the musical guest!

The following week comedian Sarah Silverman will take on hosting duties with Maroon 5 as musical guest.

It makes me proud to see an actor like Chris Pratt going so far. His talent has been rewarded and is completely deserving of all the praise that comes with it. A once under appreciated and unknown actor, Chris Pratt is now the star of many box office and television hits.

Be sure to watch Pratt star in the seventh and final season of NBC's Parks & Recreations. He will also be starring in the much anticipated film Jurassic World which hits theaters June 2015.

Blood Sugar Summer Haunted

For The Fan Presents:

Blood Sugar Summer “Haunted” Single (2014)

There is a lot of music that comes out today and you don’t get to hear it. I don’t like that notion, so I try my best to look for all sorts of new acts, good music, and even publish my playlists daily through last.fm. Upon coming across Blood Sugar Summer, I recognized one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time. It’s with the release of “Haunted” from their upcoming record, that I realized the duo of Benjó James and Jack Wilson may very well be my new favorite artists.

Simon Pegg Talks Robert Orci!

Let's take out our Delorean back to what seems like a million years ago. Man does time fly. Back in May it was announced that Robert Orci would be directing the third installment of the Star Trek franchise. Other than a name being attached not much else was said. Well, until now.

In an interview with BBC, actor Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty, said that Orci taking over the third film "makes perfect sense."

Pegg stated, "I'm really happy he's doing it as it's kept within the family kind of thing, it's not somebody coming in from outside. Bob's been there since the first Star Trek - by that I mean the 2009 one - so it seemed to make perfect sense that he come in as a director on this one because he gets it. He was always the most Trekkie of all of those guys anyway, he's always understood the story the best so it's great that he's going to be involved in the writing and directing."

This is exciting. It may be small, but it does bring hope that this film will be as successful as its predecessors. Of course, we can't really judge until we see more, but a speck of light is at least standing.

Pegg, also claimed that even though Abrams will be busy directing the next Star Wars film. He expects to see him attached in some way, shape or form.

"I don't think JJ would be able to let it completely go because that's not in his nature."

This only adds to the reassurance of what could be a great film. I can't wait to see more as the film develops.

Stay tuned!

Ivan Reitman And His Future With Ghostbusters: If Any

A few days ago Comingsoon.net had the chance to sit down in an interview with director, Ivan Reitman where they spoke about Reitmans recent release "Draft Day." BUT we're not here to talk about that now are we?

At the end of the interview Reitman was asked about his future with the third installment of Ghostbusters. Sadly, the answer was practically "none at all," but hey it's worth asking right? He continued by explaining why he declined to direct the next Ghostbusters film. Don't close page just yet. He will still be involved! I mean it is his movie after all.

"I am very involved. I'm a producer of the film," he told them. "I wasn't giving it all up. I suddenly felt that Ghostbusters didn't necessarily need me as a director, at least I didn't need to direct Ghostbusters, let me put it that way. Having done the other two and with the passing of Harold and with Bill Murray seeming disinterested being in it, I thought it was better for me just to produce it and to make sure we're going to have the quality and style of what is appropriate for another version of that film. But the franchise could benefit from somebody else's point of view. I've done it twice before and it will be great to get somebody else to lend a hand as well."
They continued by asking him about the development of the upcoming sequel to his 1988 comedy, Twins.

Reitman continued, "I'd say it's very much in the development stage and it's now caught up in the middle of studio stuff," he explained.

Whether it be in Ghostbusters or Twins (two) we will have some fun stuff to look forward to.

After all it is Reitman we're talking about. This man has given us some films that I'm sure we've had some of our best times with.

Nina Kotova Plays Profoundly Beautiful Cello Music on Her Latest Release of J.S. Bach Suites

For The Fan Presents:

Nina Kotova "J.S. Bach The Cello Suites" (2014) Review

When it comes to classical music, you most likely know the big names from the past. But did you know that there are a lot of contemporary players, soloists, conductors and more that are creating beautiful music? That’s what you get when you listen to Nina Kotova’s latest record of J.S. Bach Suites for Cello. I was completely stunned with this release as I didn’t expect it to be as transformative as it is. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best release I’ve heard all year, and that trumps nearly every single record I’ve reviewed to this day.

Mouth of The South Struggle Well

For The Fan Presents:

Mouth of The South “Struggle Well” (2014) Review

Facedown Records has been making some serious moves lately. They put out a ton of records in the past decade, and for those that have grown up with the hardcore scene in the 909 area code of Southern California, you know very well what they are all about. The label is one of the tried and true staples of hardcore and metal-core and release after release they have been pushing forward no matter what. I’m impressed with their longevity, and their latest string of releases are incredible, including the latest release from Mouth of The South.

Delyric Oracle Vanilla Sky

For The Fan Presents:

Delyric Oracle “Vanilla Sky” (2014) Review

There are so many hip hop records released through the year that it becomes difficult to get to all of them. Some stand out from others, and if you focus on the independent world, you really get art in the form of music. That’s what you get when you finally sit down to hear Delyric Oracle. On the release of “Vanilla Sky” you’re treated to a modernist effort, one akin to the art that you may not understand, but you will definitely call talented and unique. The delivery here is one that you’re going to stand back and just wonder, it’s the type of work that makes you think, because it’s different, refreshing, and downright unique.

Broken Bells After The Disco

For The Fan Presents:

Broken Bells “After The Disco” (2014) Review

I’ve been lost in a sea of freelance writing. No one tells you that being a freelancer will require you to work 10 – 14 hour days, 7 days a week. But the one thing about working for yourself, or rather on your own is that you can listen to music all day and night. It’s a dream, it’s a gift, but the work is a curse because it’s a far cry from what the 9 to 5 world gets paid. Fulfilling, yes, but that’s for another time. The latest release from Broken Bells is a mix of melancholy tunes and creative combinations that trumps their debut record by a huge leap, in my view. “After The Disco” was released recently and while pop radio is going to miss playing singles from this record, fans will once again tune into some of the more interesting music coming out of the musical landscape right now.

Statistics Often Lie

For The Fan Presents:

Statistics “Often Lie” (2005) Review

The sound of the underground was brewing some incredible music in the late 1990s and through the early half of the 2000s. Statistics was one of those bands that was producing some incredible recordings, and yet didn’t get the mainstream success that other bands seemed to get. On the Jade Tree label, they were able to create a lot of good music, and only now are people starting to realize it in many ways. For fans of indie, shoe gaze, and guitar driven rock music, this sits well with the rest of the collection. But for those that are looking at this genre for the first time, you’ll be astonished by what Statistics puts together on their 2005 release “Often Lie”. It’s a mix of 9 tracks that will go from the heights of independent rock to the lows of emo and indie.

Short of the Week: Lights Out

A wildly fun romp of horrific proportions.

This technically can't be qualified as a short film. Instead it feels like nothing more than a short scene that aims to scare the audience -- and it works. It builds tension, anxiety, and all the things a horror film needs to do get you to wet your pants. The shots are ominous and carry with it a grand amount of suspense. This isn't something that will go down in history as the "GREATEST FILM OF ALL TIME," but definitely succeeds at being a hell of ride.

It's Lights Out for you.

Note: This was entered into the the Who's There Film Challenge which is something I plan on entering sometime in the future and so should you!

Short of the Week: JohnnyExpress

Genocide has never been this fun.

Mixing the best of a Futurama episode and vividly colorful animation. JohnnyExpress takes the shape of a film that is nothing short of a good time.

Atmosphere Southsiders

For The Fan Presents:

Atmosphere “Southsiders” (2014) Review

Slug is back and this time he shakes off the dust that plagued his last release and brings back the incredible rhymes that came through on “When Life Gives You Lemons…” In fact, it was that previous album that garnered so much critical acclaim for Slug. The introspective lyricism, and the forward thinking thought process of an alternative rapper shines through on “Southsiders”. He finds a way to complicate the task through eclectic soundscapes and delivery in what you would expect from Atmosphere. The record starts off with an instant classic, “Camera Thief”, which bridges the gap from “Shoulda Known” and “The Family Sign”.

Army of The Pharaohs In Death Reborn

For The Fan Presents:

Army of The Pharaohs “In Death Reborn” (2014) Review

It’s interesting to see how underground hip hop has evolved. Groups and rappers that are outside of the mainstream have found a way to put pencil to paper and create lavish landscapes of poetry, and no one listens. No one online seemed to be talking about the drop of one of the best hip hop records of all time, that’s right, of all time, and it’s not coming from Eminem or Jay Z. Drake and the rest of the boys that are making big money on lackluster vocabulary, need to step back and let Army of The Pharaohs start to bring forth a new era in rap. On this year’s release, “In Death Reborn”, the group ties together all the loose ends and knocks down the most vocabulary words you can possibly think about into a stellar example of how you rhyme just about anything with extended verses.

Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Rating: 9/10 (A-)

Release Date: May 2nd 2014 (US Release)
Directed by: Marc Webb
Produced by: Avi Arad & Matt Tolmach

Starring:
Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Sally Field, and Paul Giamatti

Synopsis:

We've always known that Spider-Man's most important conflict has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that his greatest battle is about to begin. It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

Family, Fun, and Comics: Free Comic Book Day 2014

For The Fan Presents:

Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day, takes place on the first Saturday of May. It is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores. Retailer Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California brainstormed the event in his "Big Picture" column in the August 2001 issue of Comics & Games Retailer magazine. Free Comic Book Day started in 2002 and is coordinated by the industry's single large distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors.

It is safe to say that this year was a successful one! People of all walks of life went down to their local comic store and immersed themselves into the geek community. Young or old, Free Comic Book Day had something for everyone. All stores were friendly and completely in the spirit of this grand holiday.

The best part of this event has to be seeing kids at very young age being introduced to a brand new world. A world of all things superhero and comics. (Personally, I'd rather see a kid with a comic than a cell phone.)

At any rate, Free Comic Book Day 2014 was a blast. It was fun meeting and talking with everyone. We can't wait for next year!
