Review of the Book
Upon hearing the announcement back in November about this new "diverse" version of Ms. Marvel I was instantly pissed off. Not because the main character(s) in the title follow the religion of Islam, but because to me, Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers and should remain the staple and the name of, Carol Danvers. (at least the female versions of the character since the original Captain Marvel was an Alien male.) It wasn't until Monday evening when I was making up this week's "Comic Book Buy List" that I decided to pick up this title, and I'll be honest, the main reason I picked up this book was because I thought it would make a good review, and thought that I could definitely be surprised and be adding a new title to my pull box. Especially with all the "controversy" behind the book I thought it would make an interesting read. At the end of the day, I was not surprised, didn't care too much for the book, and wish that I could get my $3 dollars back that I spent on this book. The reason I did not like this book was not because of the fact Kamala and her family are Muslim, but is because I found the writing to be absolutely horrendous and the art to be a joke. Ultimately I believe that this book is a stunt by Marvel so that in the media's eyes they are seen as "diverse" and "accepting." The writing in this book to me, seemed like it was almost making fun of the Islamic faith. You have Kamala who in the very beginning of the book is contemplating eating bacon and asking the store clerk if she can just smell it. Then you have a "typical ignorant white teenage female" walk in and begin cracking jokes about the girl and her friends religious faith. When Kamala goes home, her brother is 100% thrown into his faith and is a bit over the top about it, while her dad acts like he could honestly care less about his faith and as a result, we have the father telling the son to quit using his faith as an excuse to not get a job. Surely, I could be missing the humor in this book since I myself am not a follower of Islam, but to me, as an outsider looking in, the writing was trying way to hard to be something it's not, and was trying ridiculously hard to make a character seem relatable to people outside of the books target audience, which is something that can completely take a reader out of the moment and out of the main protagonists world. The one scene in this book that honestly really really pissed me off to now end was when the heavens opened up and Carol Danvers, Iron Man, and Captain America came down from the sky with flying pigs and other flying animals and began speaking Arabic, as if Kamala was having a vision about who she will become in the future. This was really one of the most un necessary things I have ever seen in comic books(and thats saying something). I get that this is an origin story, but while reading it, I had to ask myself "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN THIS BOOK!!!!" I try not to cuss to much in my reviews, but in this instance it is 100% necessary! Okay, enough ranting about the writing, let me move on to the other equally as terrible part of this book... The art. My god.. It looked like Marvel employed a kindergartner at some points for this issue. The way the people were drawn was a joke. When Jonah is exiting the market or coffee house(not quite sure what it was) where he works, the person he is handing the keys too looks like one of those damn people from the Pixar film "Wall-E." And that happens a few times in this book. It's hard for me to write this review because I really was hoping that this book was going to pull a fast one on me, and really give me something impressive so that I could keep reading it and really latch onto the character of Kamala Khan. It's also really hard for me to bash a comic book like I have in this review because as a writer myself(I can't draw for the life of me), I understand how much work and how much love and passion you put into each and every script. And ultimately I usually love every book I read because I LOVE COMICS. I definitely don't plan on picking up any more issues of the "All New Marvel Now" Ms. Marvel title and really don't see Marvel keeping the book around for that long. When reading it, it really doesn't feel like a Marvel-esque book and really doesn't give you anything to attach to and feel connected to.

In all honesty, save the three dollars you would spend on this book and buy something else. The writing is very "try hard", and the art is terrible. Sorry but this book is definitely a pass.
